Poem -

A Branch

A Branch

I sat at a corner of an empty room
Half-naked and clothed with sweat
The ceiling dripped
Thunder exploded
My eyes danced in thick darkness
The paintings on the cracked walls disappeared
The knob was the only light I could see
Silence swallowed me up
The only voice I heard was that of my silence
Ghosts whispered death into my half-dead ears
They read to me scripts that I fought to bury in the past
They dug my shame, failures and regrets to the surface
Life mocked me
Death courted me
My strength fought me
My self left me
I could hear my heart not beat for seconds
I heard from afar the voices of dirge composers
I was almost carried on the shoulders of their songs
But my mind strung together a different melody
It preached a word that my lips dread to spill
‘You’re a branch on which fruits hang’ it said
‘You’re a twisted twig on which buds thrive’

Hi Anthony, Sometimes....we can be our own worst enemy in life with the guilt and shame we place upon ourselves when we cannot forget or forgive what life has brought.  It is easy to go to dark places...but I like how your poem seems to offer hope at the end...that glimmer that life matters....So well done...One of my favs by you! xo ;)

I had to read this a few times because the imagery touched something inside me. To find a seedling of hope when one has already accepted death... I can almost taste the resentment. Those kinds of feelings do not turn on and off like a light switch. It takes much to change the mind that is set in purpose. You discuss that very well. I think that is what snared me about your write. Nicely done sir. Blessings.
