Poem -

Dragons Destiny

How effortlessly you glide
Into the dark and lonely night;
A spectre of surprise,
A spectre of delight.
How helplessly you call
Beneath the vast, black, velvet sky,
Still you get no answer
From your piercing cry.
No mortal man will help you,
You are the last to cry your tears.
A creature of sorrow,
A creature full of fear.

How relentlessly he hunts
You through the dark and lonely night;
He will follow your cries,
He will follow from sight.
How earnestly he rides
In the light of the fullest moon
Tracking your footprints,
He'll be with you soon.
Your fire won't warm his heart,
Mercy in him can't be found.
He's out to win his spurs,
He's out to hush your sound.

So helplessly you call
Beneath the vast, black, velvet sky;
You do not want to to fight,
You do not want to die.
Yet effortlessly you're struck
By the sword of the noble knight,
No spectre of surprise,
No spectre of delight.
Now you've joined your brothers
Up to that land so far away,
A creature of fantasy
Who, in legend will stay.

HI Tina...I love dragons and their legends...I have written poems about them on Cosmo....I feel sorry for their plight of extinction...so unfair.  The knights stripped them of their glory.  But their legend lives on....I believe that dragons used to be real creatures....for their pictures are in caves and even mentioned as flying serpents in the bible....there is basis for their tales...Love your portrayal of a times gone by....xox

Hi Cherie.

Thanks for your insightful input. I never knew there were cave paintings found of them. I really hope they were real.

Thanks for reading. I'm glad you liked it.

I love this descriptive and well thought out narrative...sad in subject...but so well done that it took away the sadness for me...you were able to trick my emotion in a good way...and that by itself only a talented poem can do. :)..

I used to use a dragon avatar on another site. They're always so majestic in fantasy tales even if they get a bad rap. :)

Nicely done.

Thank you Keith. I am glad you liked it. Thank you for reading. I love writing about such things and even ordinary things put in those sort of settings. I suppose it's because this world can be so bland and bitter at times that I search out for the little bits of magic that are hidden from all but the discerning eye. (Not that my eye is discerning ... if I can't find it, I make it up. Lol).

Thanks again for taking the time to read and comment, it is very much appreciated.

Hi, Tina!

I enjoyed your fanciful poem and the strong emotion within.
It made my heart sad for the "creature of sorrow."

Well-done!

Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten.”
― Neil Gaiman, Coraline

Oh I enjoyed this very much Tina : )

Hi Dblankportrait portrait, the quote was very relevant for this; I've not heard of that before.

Thank you for reading and thank you for your comment which, as always, is very much appreciated.

i feel sorry for the dragon who so desperately wanted to live and yet died. i like your poem tina..... the dragon actually sounds friends but sorrowful , sad and kind of lost and it's man that is horrible , not him .. i am reading a book about dragons, the third one in a series of five and this one is called the golden cage and it's by an author called J.D Oswald,  some dragons in here are depicted as very friendly

i like your writing...

and if you like dragons , you should read these books ... look him up J.D  Oswald...

Thank you Charlotte ☺ for both reading and for your lovely comments.

This is exactly what I was trying to convey... that perhaps dragons became extinct through man's ignorance... just like all the animals that have done and continue to do so by the way human kind is going.  Thank heavens for the people that give their lives trying to save endangered species.

I do like dragons. And Unicorns and fairy folk. Haha, can you tell I've never grown up 😂

Thanks for your book recommendation! I will definitely check it out. I love stuff like that.

Have a good day

yes, exactly ! the human race is the problem here and always has been ,, sadly :-(

fantasy books are my favourite , i used to read more , librarys are not very good in regards to fantasy books ... i sometimes think where do we get books from , if libraries are not too good , are we supposed to be paying out for books .

you are welcome :-) my twin sister bought these books for herself so i've been reading them aswell.. tho i struggled with feeling totally involved sometimes, i guess its my mental state

can i ask you a favour .. i have part 17 of my story on here i really want to know what someone thinks but nobody comments.. can you maybe have a look and tell me what you think of how i have wrote this ..

Yes I'd love to and will. Is it on the stories section? I shall go on your pages and check it out and leave feedback back. I'm in between work at the minute ... in a horses field lol. So when I can give it my full attention I will read it. That is the very next thing I shall read. Promise !!

And libraries seem to have a lot less book choice these days... which is sad. I totally agree with you.

I look forward to reading your storyhave a good day!

yes it is , its the 17th part i have posted of my story .. so my story is a very long one , if you read part 17 alone i guess you won't be able to gain a full picture   but any thoughts on this would be appreciated .... so far my story is at the 12, 000 point and i am still going with it so it's not a short one at all ! lol

thanks very much tina.... maybe if you read part 16 before part 17, part 17 might make a little more sense ..

i think in regards to fantasy books , the book choice is quite limited ... other book genre's and there seems to be a lot more choice which is really a shame as fantasy books are my favourite !

i have another recommendation for you .. google '' The night circus '' by Erin Morgenstein.... a completely amazing book ..............
