Humdrum Town U.S.A.

Butterflies fluttering flower to flower,
autumnal leaves collected with a rugged rake,
panting joggers run around a shimmering lake,
lethargic traffic during the morning rush hour.
Strip malls and fast food chains,
a sidewalk sign spinner entertains,
cashiers repeating "have a nice day",
schools out and kids want to play,
advertising boards and neon lights,
beckoning the poor, the rich and socialites.
Senior folk recalling wistful stories of yesterdays,
these city blocks have ancient, gnarly oak trees,
sometimes, there's a refreshing cool breeze,
and snowbird golfers, frustrated on the fresh cut fairways.
Excited kids playing softball in the community park,
school buses full of boisterous youth,
cocky teenagers can be so heedless and uncouth,
territorial dogs will occasionally yap and bark.
Distant sirens race to a troubled incident,
deer hunters in a leafy forest take aim,
noisy crowds at the high school football game,
blushing lovers, holding hands, joyful and content.
Passing trucks with full beam headlights,
makes no difference day or night,
pan handlers begging at the junction,
people stare with skeptical presumption,
speeding motorists and blaring music,
some people are just rock bottom basic.
A heartfelt gaze of love on a young mothers face,
while the tired and weary travel to a reassuring home,
in the verdant hedges, hesitant critters forage and roam,
mockingbirds and cardinals fly by with assured grace.
Alligators bask under a tropical midday's sun,
the old and the worn out rest on a comfortable seat,
musical heads are bopping to the latest beat,
the planets overhead continue their oblivious run.
Wearing pajamas at the local store,
lazy attire not to be seen on a dance floor,
skimpy shorts and saggy pants,
modern costumes make a fine romance,
parents shouting and kids crying,
sunny days and fluffy clouds flying.
Giggling girls and hormonal boys full of false bravado,
toned fitness fanatics sweat at the local health clubs,
green fingered gardeners pruning azalea shrubs,
disheartened people looking to fill a vacuous hollow.
In shadows, drug addicts paying for a score,
an entitled generation demanding more and more,
people needing a thrill to fill their lives of despair,
watching T.V, cellphone in hand, sat on an armchair,
listening to stories from the old timers,
on lazy afternoons during balmy summers.
Noisy ball games in the local parks,
everyone has favorite landmarks,
walking their dogs in the parks and streets,
sports fans wailing at their teams defeat,
life is the same most towns and cities,
full of stories and cheerful ditties.
Mowing their yards, avoiding the fire ants,
checking the newspaper for local events,
fishing on the banks, enjoying ones solitude,
a couple of days rest and feeling renewed,
a small corner in a dreary hum drum town,
hopeful weekends, Monday begins a countdown.
Autumnal days can be lazy and occasionally grey,
the faithful sing in their churches and piously pray,
assumed adventures await over the indifferent horizon,
tedious routine has become a mournful prison.
