Poem -

Love's Retreating Tide

Love's Retreating Tide

She is a happy, happy bride
Who welcomes in her wedding day
As 'happy ever after' rides
On Love's advancing waves.

And how those waves come crashing in;
Come crashing, rolling to the shore
Euphoric on the angel's wings
That promise love and more.

Oh how she loved with love so rare
And danced upon the golden sands,
Where gentle waves kissed ankles, bare,
In Love's own promised land.

But love can scar and love can burn,
It is as weak as it is strong
And, like the tide, a love can turn
To find its voice has gone.

She was a happy, happy bride
With smile as bright as sunshine's gleam,
But 'happy ever after' rides
On such a fragile dream.

And how those dreams fell crashing in;
Fell crashing, smashing to the floor,
All fallen from the angel's wings,
Left bruised and, oh, so sore.

Struck down by Fate's ungainly hand,
This one time happy, happy bride
Left stranded, now, on lonely sands
By Love's retreating tide.

Thank you, Nigel.  Your comments are, as always, very much appreciated. I felt like doing a "painful' one, but in a story kind of way. Thanks for reading, especially at this late hour ;-)

Hello Tina...

A great reminder to not do it...

Seriously, who really wants to go through that?

Not me...

Either way the ending is always sad...

Show me a Happy Funeral and a Happy Widowed, then I will see the hope...

Great write!

Thank you for sharing...

Hugs...

Ahahaha   You have a very, very good point.  It's always going to end badly one way or another isn't it?
Oh, your comment has made me smile loads. A different way to look at things ... and a healthier way too, I think.

Thank you Sparrowsong, I adore your words of wisdom :-)  :-)

Hugs, my friend

Just easier on the heart my friend...

It's hard enough to lose a friend...

Why seek more pain and punishment to yourself?

It always helps help to watch first...

By that I mean watch the guy get turned down by someone else before he tries to make those Oh baby moves on you...

Give me a break...

Even that would be better...

Escape by Ambulance...

Saved!

Hugs again...

Yet nothing can to nothing fall,
Nor any place be empty quite;
Therefore I think my breast hath all
Those pieces still, though they be not unite;
And now, as broken glasses show
A hundred lesser faces, so
My rags of heart can like, wish, and adore,
But after one such love, can love no more.
John Donne

I liked seeing how happy the bride was, then there is this sad reality at the end , unfortunately many can relate to , but no matter how broken and torn a heart, it seems to love deeper and deeper yet.

As painful as this write was, I enjoyed how eloquently it was delivered.💐🌷✍💛

Thank you, my dearest friend, for your kind and insightful words. As always they are words of truth that you speak. A broken heart does yearn for love like no other and is capable of such deep love 💐

The poem you quoted by John Donne is beautiful. It is sobering to think that it was written such a long time ago and yet still we suffer in the same ways. Perhaps time is not as good as healing as we are led to believe 😉

Thanks again 😊 🌷

I think there's a tin line between being hopeful and living a life deception, we do often delve into our imaginative concepts , however motivated or influentially driven ,when reality favors to convey us to the insufferable.

I think you are right. And it is a very thin line.

Kidding our selves into believing everything is okay when it's not seems to be innate in us humans. I suppose we do it to make ourselves feel better. But then, when it all falls apart it is so hard to come to terms with.

I hope you are well 😊 ☕  💐🌷 x

My Dear Tina,

Such tears of joy the young lady cried
With the promise of love, to ne'er be denied
Her wedding took place so near to the sea
Each wave with the promise of how happy she'd be

.
But too soon came the storms and the hurricane winds
Bringing sacred vows endings, her dear one rescinds
Now all alone, her tears again come
But instead of from joy, such sadness they strum

Love,
Larry xxx

There now, you see where love gets you?
Nowhere, that's where!
Nowhere but drowning in despair and heartache.
Love is merely lust that comes with a much heftier price tag.
I have no use for it whatsoever.
As the iconic rock bad, YES!, once wrote...

Owner of a lonely heart
Owner of a lonely heart
is much better than a
Owner of a broken heart...
owner of a broken heart...

Lovely poem regardless of my personal take on love and romance, Tina.
Hugs...

Hi Dean.  I think the idea is you fall in love with the right person, stay madly in love and live happily ever after  a haha ....
BUT ... we are also taught that nothing lasts forever. In my experience love certainly doesn't. There are people, tho, who have stayed married a lifetime and been very happy (both working at it the whole time) and of course those that have stayed together and really shouldn't have. I have also learnt that live can be trampled on, taken for granted and even stolen from you.
 Love those lyrics!!

Thank you so much for reading, Dean, I really appreciate it and your comments. I know these love and romance type writes  are not your "thing" 😃 so thank you for braving it out, my friend  🌻

Hi Tina, this is a quality write. I especially liked the lines

Where gentle waves kissed ankles, bare,
In Love's own promised land.

And..

And, like the tide, a love can turn
To find its voice has gone.

Enjoyed. And I'm not much of a romantic.

Take care  - Syd xo

Thank you, Jeff, so much for reading. Glad you liked it. I find love is very much like the tide as it ebbs and flows ... sometimes leaving us stranded and other times sweeping us up in it all 😊

Tina this was sad yet so beautiful I loved the way you
worded each stanza - just perfect.  So lovely love hurts
in so many ways the pain is sometimes unbearable.

Tears on a lonely shore
waves crash and roar
I'll have no more
yet more tears fall

We love again
we cannot hide
the tides return
tears subside

Hugs Tina

Anne, thank you so very much for reading. Love in all its guises is such an important emotion for a poet (not that I am one, lol).

Hey Tina....I a so sorry I missed this...I am so behind on here...but I love your poetry and hate that I missed this gem.  You show the roller coaster ride of love through the metaphor using an ocean's tide.....Love can lead one high and above the world or come crashing down hard.....It is funny though how stubborn and determined love is, despite being hurt, to always feel deeply with all it has despite the risks!  I know I am this way and can relate to believing in its draw despite the challenges...I love the honesty of this...Great work!  xo Love n Hugs  Cherie

Bless you, Cherie!  I know you are very busy. What with writing and wedding planning 😉   How's the book coming along? I too miss loads on here...I don't mean to, there is so much being posted on here! (Which is a good thing). I am so happy you managed to read this and even happier that you liked it (I feel honoured, in fact).  😊

I feel that love is just like the tide/ocean with its highs and lows and just like water that is still and unmoving, it can also stagnate.
Thank you again for reading and leaving such a supportive comment 💟
