Identity

I created this on the first day of school after I had arrived  with my hair dyed green (it was originally turquoise, but all blue-toned hair dyes tend to fade to green) and I was rudely called out of class by the name 'green-hair girl' (which sounds a little funny now that I'm saying it a few months after, but in front of my whole form class of teenagers wasn't quite so hilarious), and I was told that my coloured hair wasn't allowed. I was angered very much by this situation as the teacher didn't give any reasoning as to why it wasn't alllowed, and the rules given to us at the beginning of the year only stated that 'crazy or distracting hair styles are not accepted' - considering no one noticed the green hair except my friend and the teacher herself, I wouldn't deem it quite so distracting as she made it out to be. It made me realise that hair dye, makeup, and piercings are all things that are fun to experiment with, and can define who we are - no one (especially a place of education) should take that away from us. This is the problem with society. It labels everything and this causes young people to be afraid to experiment with colour and things that make us who we are. Though coloured hair apparently wasn't 'professional' according to my school, it didn't need to be professional to me.Â
