God Save The Gammon

They pine for days that never were,
Through fag-stained teeth and stagnant slur.
Where blackface clowns and monkey chants
Still echo loud in bitter rants.
The snow was whiter, summers long
They hum some half-remembered song.
No climate lies, no “woke” offence,
Just ignorance dressed up as sense.
They clutch their flags like sacred skin,
Wrap rot and rage and hate within.
A pint, a bet, a Brexit cheer
No future grows, but still they sneer.
Stagnant days spent waiting,
wishing something meaningful to happen.
Pints, regrets and the stench of gammon.

Hello Syd...
When people meet God face to face...
That's when real panic will set in...
The worse thing people will fear here...
That's just a sample...
Fear definitely can make a face freeze...
Twice in seconds...
Great write!
Thank you for sharing...

I'd go so much further than to say this poetry is superb, kudos on your honest look at life when we are faced with the extreme right, or what used to be called the national front, I'm a Londoner and I lived through the 70/80/90's in London. I learnt many life lessons in the south of London all of which I am proud of. It's always truly humbling to find more poets who think like myself. Kudos sir. 🌹
Thank you so much Shirley. I'm both sorry and grateful that you can relate to this piece.
Thanks again.
