scragamuffin

as kids we'd be warned
God is watching mind
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
of the nine scragamuffin kidsÂ
who played out in our streetÂ
none of us was called god
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
none of us went to church
still, we'd stare wide eyed at
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
whichever admonishing parent
had issued this great threat
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
checking our numbersÂ
to ensure we'd not let
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
an outsider in
What I like most about this poem is how you have written it as if that ragamuffin kid had written it, like you have got into their head and are back there in that time.Â
I love the enjambement and it reads like a single sentence. "None of us was called God" is a great line just what a kid would say and I like the number checking.Â
Words of an era, one I can picture for sure. x
Dear Marion, I think you’re talking (and believing) Spinoza god. Have a look. I think this’s Spinoza God.
