Summer's Lease

Summer's Lease

Live this day like the last days of summer,
when the spotted grass no longer grieves
its blades lost to the late August bake.

Steal home like a middling squad's rookie speedster,
who left it all on the field for his team weeks ago.

Take the time to let it fly,
while daylight sheds
its last conceit.

Close your eyes,
listen...

The wind churns through the wilted leaves.

And feel the giggles of children in the street,
blissfully unaware of their pending lessons...
curling the ends of your lips
and making your soul hum...

melded within the echoed chimes
that mark the deeds
that the breeze has done.

As the shreds of empty wrappers of
blooms,
sparklers
and cracklers
all but find their way...

to the deepest reaches of your world.

Take heed but play!

For freedom's day
has come and gone.

And summer's lease
hath all too short a date.
