Heirs of History - Chapter 4
Sabrina woke to the soft glow of morning light filtering through her window. A strange sense of peace and clarity enveloped her as she lay in bed, pondering her feelings. Today, she felt unburdened, free of doubt. Smiling, she rose and walked to the window, only to pause mid-step.
"No, today isn’t the day to watch birds. I have something more important to do," she murmured to herself, heading straight to the kitchen.
Her mother was busy preparing breakfast and raised her eyebrows in surprise at Sabrina’s arrival.
"Well, this is rare! My daughter in the kitchen to help with breakfast?"
Sabrina smiled. "Mom, I just felt like lending a hand today."
Her mother laughed, saying, "It seems the last spirit within you has finally awakened!"
Confused, Sabrina asked, "What do you mean by ‘last spirit,’ Mom?"
Her mother smiled knowingly. "You have Sebastian’s poetic flair, Reynold’s seriousness, Nahiyan’s intellectual creativity, but today, Alex’s responsible nature has emerged."
Sabrina, intrigued, replied, "And how can you tell that I embody all of them?"
Her mother’s expression softened. "Because you have Alex’s face, Reynold’s height, Sebastian’s gait, and Nahiyan’s sweet tone. You are their perfect blend, my child."
They both laughed, and after breakfast, her mother left for work. Sabrina picked up her bag, ready to face the day.
The campus canteen was bustling as usual. Her friends were already gathered, waiting for her. As she entered, Alyan quipped, "Here comes our poet-doctor. So, tell us why we were summoned with such urgency?"
Fred added, "Must be some big revelation. Spill it, doctor; we’re dying to know!"
Sabrina grinned. "Not here. Let’s head to the park; it’s quieter there."
Alyan laughed. "Of course, the boss wants to tell her tale in her favorite setting."
The five friends settled on a park bench, the air heavy with anticipation. Sabrina took a deep breath.
"I’ve made my decision. I will proceed with this hypothesis. Fred and Alyan will provide samples, and Sinan will handle the injection."
The group was stunned. Joey erupted, "What? That’s impossible! I’ll die if someone else’s child is created!"
Sabrina calmly explained, "Joey, if this hypothesis succeeds, we’ll be remembered forever. This college has produced thousands of doctors over two centuries, but none left a lasting legacy. This experiment will make us immortal in the annals of science."
Fred protested. "I can’t be part of this madness! This is just a theory, and you’re risking your life for it!"
Turning to Alyan, Sabrina asked, "And you? What do you think?"
Alyan, abandoning her usual playfulness, replied seriously, "I’m with you every step of the way, Sabrina. If you want, Joey and I will provide our samples. But..."
Sabrina interrupted softly. "No, this is my decision, and I’ll see it through myself."
Joey and Fred stormed off angrily, refusing to support her.
Three days later, Sinan informed Sabrina that he had acquired the necessary materials from the college staff. She called him and Alyan to her house.
When they arrived, Sinan seemed uneasy, scanning the room for someone. Sensing his discomfort, Sabrina smiled.
"Be patient, Sinan. Along with Alyan’s sample, yours will be used as well."
Sinan recoiled. "What? My sample? No way!"
Alyan playfully nudged him. "It’s the boss’s order. Comply, or I’ll expose your theft to the entire college!"
Defeated, Sinan reluctantly prepared and injected the combined samples into Sabrina.
Four days later, Sabrina woke feeling nauseous. Her mother rushed her to the doctor, and the tests confirmed that she was pregnant.
The news filled Sabrina with a new sense of purpose. Hugging her mother, she declared, "Mom, I’ve done it."
Her mother smiled warmly. "My child, your journey has just begun."
A wave of maternal emotion swept over Sabrina as she gazed skyward, ready to embrace the bright future ahead.
