Ghost Fighter

The chiseled Adonis
had all the tools
a champion needs
Power, stamina, and speed
A huge heart with mad skills
The whole battle package
Except for one fatal design flaw
A porcelain like glass jaw
Tap it and down he went
to taste the canvas
An anatomical
career buster for a boxer
Today the former fighter
is a pugilistic teacher
of global renown
Trainer of champions
By conventional standards
of happiness
he is the definition of success
and yet..
Late night
when alone in the gym
he hops into the ring
to shadow box with the past
Forever sparring against
the ghost
of what could have been

Are you talking about Adonis Stevenson? If so, what superb
lines you’re saying here, specially the last four lines. “What could have been” haunts most, more so…
Great champions.

I wasn't familiar with the biography of Adonis Stevenson, but I looked him up and his life has been an inspiring story of grit and determination..Thanks for sharing this with me,, The boxer who inspired this poem was Floyd Patterson who was an immensely talented fighter in the 1960's(I'm that old) whose was betrayed in big fights time and time again from his inability to take a punch...Glad you liked my poem ;)
Hi Steve, I thank you for sharing the life of Floyd Patterson with me, I had a look and felt very impressed of his accomplishments. What a remarkable man! And apparently a good man too. As a Martial Artist (Karate for over 20 years), I have an enormous respect and get immensely inspired by those Champions. And as we know, it comes with a big sacrifice. There is no free lunch, they pay a big price. It often cost their health and sometimes their lives. Quite a
few came from very poor background and boxing is a way out of poverty,
not only for themselves but also for their families.
I take my hat off to them! I know you do too.
