Poem -

9/11

9/11

It was September 10th

the night before

Hell fell from the skies

and visited us in our safe place.

We were comfortable

I remember

A burger dinner

done on

the backyard barbeque

You wanted me

that night I felt you

Against me

in the bed  full of desire.

I pretended to to be asleep

The kids

had tired me out that day.

And it would

wait until Saturday.

When the weekend

and afew drinks

would help the mood.

I think above all else

I would have changed that.

In the morning

coffee and toast.

And the rush to get

the kids out to school.

I think I pulled

that lock of hair

back from your forehead

as you left.

More as a sign that you

Still belonged to me

A small signal

that I loved you.

Coffee at last the house

was empty,

just my time.

Then the phone call.

My friend said

put on the television

The planes had landed

the buildings fell

turning into

grey and black ash,

like the rest of my life

I knew I should

have made love to you

Last night.
