A Letter To Disney

Dear Disney,
Thank you for teaching me that
I have to change myself in order to be loved.
Ariel visited a sea witch and swapped her
tail for legs, for a man who was easily swayed into
taking another woman to the altar.
 
Dear Disney,
Thank you for teaching me that
a woman is only good for doing chores.
Cinderella was made to stay home
to cook and clean all-day
while her step mum and sisters were out partying.
 
Dear Disney,
Thank you for teaching me that
it’s not okay to talk to strangers unless they’re good looking.
Aurora was told not to speak to strangers
but I guess singing and dancing together
doesn’t count as talking?
 
Dear Disney,
Thank you for teaching me that
every beast is just a soft guy with a rough exterior.
Belle was made to shut herself off from society and
dedicated her every moment to trying
to tame the beast because he’s a good guy deep down.
 
Dear Disney,
Thank you for teaching me that
I need to give up everything for a man.
Megara sold her soul to Hades who
used her like a puppet on a string, all for
a man who thanked her by running off with another woman.
Dear Disney,
Thank you for teaching me that
it's okay to be lied to.
Jasmine fell in love and married a man
who lied to her face by telling her that
he was a prince from some far off place.
 
Dear Disney,
Thank you for teaching me that
it's never too early to start looking for Mr Right.
Snow White was fourteen when she was
saved by and married her Prince Charming after he
kissed her without consent while she was sleeping in the woods.
 
Dear Disney,
Thank you for teaching me that
no matter how hard we work, we must depend on men.
Tiana worked two jobs and saved every spare penny she got
but couldn't make her dreams come true until
Prince Naveen came to the rescue.
 
Dear Disney,
Thank you for teaching me that
It’s okay to betray my friends and family for a man.
Pocahontas ignored her father’s rules and
betrayed her tribe for a foreign man
who didn’t even speak the same language.
