A Love for All Seasons (Co-written with F. G. Franklin)

A Love for All Seasons (Co-written with F. G. Franklin)

In the spring as flowers were blooming, I reached out for your hand

Your fingers; caught like a trembling bird, imprisoned in the grasp of man

In my green eyes you found no guile, although my hands were hard and rough

My touch was tender as my lips found yours and I first tasted love

It seems to me like yesterday; my memory guards each precious thing

As eyes grow dim and hair turns gray I find joy in remembering spring

What were the petals of that splendid love; that fragrant, pleasant flower?

Every moment our dreams were made of; every heartbeat till this hour

It was a fertile time when seeds were sown in hope of harvesting future joy

In the hearts and minds of two young kids; a pretty girl and a country boy

Ahead lay the joys of summer, how wonderful to be alive and young

The trees were greening and the birds were singing in our early morning sun

Beneath a burning golden sun I reached up for your outstretched hand.

The boy I’d known in springtime had grown into this summer man

In whose sweet eyes my dreams I found, earnest in the light of day,

Pregnant with promises planted in spring; tended by your gentle ways

Heaven; dreams that became reality, I had never known the word "forever"

The ties that bound our hearts together were cords no mortal words could sever

Such yearning love, a mystery in a passion so deeply and truly found,

Our children are like your kiss to me; their laughter to us, a holy sound.

The comfort of knowing your sighs, your every unspoken need and desire

To stand with you now beneath summer skies and a ball of August fire

That tests the truth of our love’s hour, and promises that changed my name,

When the dew of spring fades from the flower love is tempered in the flame

Autumn came and we kicked the colors bright and burnt beneath our feet

Our love grown now to a comfortable warm; the days are mellow and sweet

We walk along with children grown seeking knowledge of what life is for

Our hearts ache as they walk away; one off to college, one off to war

At night you snuggle close to find the warm security inside my arms

Faithful that your protector will always keep you safe from harm

The flame of our summer fire had only burned brighter towards November

The spark in the eyes of the girl that I loved now became a womanly ember

Glowing you are, wrapped in your sweater as we walk together holding hands

Our breath on the air; barely visible, against the foggy, frosted land

Our morning walks become ritual yet with slower steps we trod our path

Through all the years and tears my dear, we’ve not forgotten how to laugh

The crown of winter shows its touch of frost in your hair and mine

The comfort of two lives well spent, a love few others ever find

How extraordinary the face of each cherub grandchild seems,

Reflections of us; our children, and every precious, wished for dream

This is ours to consider, reminiscing when nights grow cold

Though death comes and passion fades, my hand is here for you to hold.

True serenity it is to me to watch you rest in quiet slumber,

While I ponder the life we’ve shared through trials and tests unnumbered

Peace and joy shall follow us; our albatross upon life’s ocean

Finding home in each other’s smile; the measured depth of true devotion

Our souls entwined like honeysuckle; crossing, clinging, tangled vines

At winters end my love, my friend; I’ll see you again in springtime.
