A MOTHER’S HEART

Even before the rooster yawns
And the dew is wiped awayÂ
From the face of the grassÂ
You rise from sleep to face the day
While the children occupy their warm beds
Positioned like forensic sketches
And their pillows once hugged in tendernessÂ
Now kiss the cold floor after a turbulent nightÂ
You rise from sleep to face the day
Driven by love and compassionÂ
You brave the elements without careÂ
Walking among wolves and serpents without fearÂ
To provide for your children in every possible way
You will rise from sleep to face the dayÂ
And when the sun has seen all there is to see
Returning to its place of obscurityÂ
Your tired feet with all their aches and painsÂ
Grace the steps as you clutch those splintered rails
To the night you surrender for a few hours of sleep
After you have washed those tiny feet
And before the rooster yawns again
You rise from sleep to face the day.
A tribute to Sandra my love.
Wilford Barker.
