A TRANSIENT SCENE CARVED FROM CLOUDS AND FADING LIGHT

On my balcony staring at the warmth of the setting sun
the rays like threads of gossamer that have been spun.
A shrinking patch of water is lit up in the distance.
God's light fading becomes a metaphor for human existence.

The shafts of light which form themselves effortlessly into pyramids
are like chutes down which angels come to a world not yet disinherited.
The clouds have constructed what looks like an Antarctic scene.
God knows what it is he wants them to mean.

There's one in the shape of a polar bear with its cubs howling at the sky,
protesting the destruction of their environment, asking one question - why?
Then the sun completes its journey and is gone.
I don't need a photo, the memory is in words, it will linger on.
