AFLOAT AFTER LOVES SUICIDE

Wrote love you
in the hard-baked clay
wrote I love you
in the beachy rubbed sand
so we could watch it drift away
perhaps to land
on another shore
another skin
you smoked topless
as the vinyl blues
helped the night sky
count these endless days

purple butterflies
covered your tired eyes
3 o'clock this morning
painting your every breath
I am the water you can bathe in
falling
from heavens crying eye

they found your fingers
curling around
the stone we found
meanings lost to the gathering crowd

you always said
sometimes the best it gets
is just another goodbye

but it's lonely on the summer carpet
edged on the sunflower shroud
how much can a man scream
how much is he allowed

Deaths teasing finger
pokes into the missing years
goodbye everybody

sometimes the best I got
was my last goodbye
