An angel on one’s shoulder
Selflessly Shiela stands on her swollen sore feet throughout the entire night
Relentlessly she pities her patients in their darkest days of blight
Overworked yet underpayed she is an angel on one’s shoulder
In their last moments of need she consoles warmth when they are colder
Nursing the sick and the elderly is something she was born to do
Giving and caring from amidst her heart of heart in someone’s hours of blue
So Shiela finishes her ten hour shift feeling emotionally drained
Ready for a long earned rest her inner self is pained
Yet as she walks through her own front door she hears her Mother’s sigh
Closer to her heartache is this poor soul’s cry
Months, weeks, days or only hours was the Doctor’s prognosis from her old Mother’s terminally ill cancerous diagnosis
As her sister and brother sit taking turns by her bed with their look of helplessness and their hands on the heads
Their eldest sister is home now she will tend to Mother’s needs
Tho there is no betterness to look forward to Oh how her heart bleeds
But she gives her siblings a hug as they walk out of her front door
She will have a nap beside her dear Mother it is quarter to four
She wets her Mother’s lips with cooled boiled water from the kettle
and tidies her light quilt so hopefully she may settle
As they both lie peacefully Shiela thinks about her old Father who passed away and how her lovely little Mother nursed his every needs till his dying day
