Poem -

art class

i thought your eyes were hazel all along
but today i looked and saw blue
not ocean blue
no, that's cliché
you're not a beach kind of person anyway
rather your eyes are a deep late sky
before all the stars arrive
the phase between day and night
and your eyes
they're polar to your terra-cotta smile
thin lipped and wide
your entire face beamed side-to-side
the eyes the smile
they were the first and final shove
suddenly the white flag in my heart surrendered
and i realized i had fallen in love
