bet
Through the flat screen, someone I barely knew typed out, Â
"You can chase a million reasons why not,
but all you need is one reason that says yes." Â
Such a simple truth, like we've all been trained to live in shadows, Â
as if letting in light means it’ll flicker out someday. Â
But no—one reason is enough to set the whole thing ablaze, Â
one risk, one spark, and the future could hold a hundred more, Â
lighting up the whole damn sky.
We’ve been fed this story, right? Â
That darkness is the default, Â
that it's safer to stick with the gloom, Â
to let the stars stay dim, Â
because who knows when they’ll burn out?
You can sit and count the reasons not to leap— Â
the pitfalls, the what-ifs, the cracks in the road. Â
Or you can find that single, defiant "yes," Â
the one that makes the whole thing worth it.
We’re always taught to be cautious, Â
to weigh every risk, to hedge every bet. Â
But no one tells you that one "yes" Â
can be louder than a thousand "no’s." Â
It’s the match in your hand, Â
waiting to set the world on fire.

I understand bet as your title here. I like how you use the Leonard Cohen quote again. It is so apt for this poem. The verse that begins "you can sit and count the reasons not to leap ......" is brilliant. I love it. I did say to myself that I wouldn't comment on another poem until a previous comment had been acknowledged but something is telling me to take that leap. So I have and here we are.Â
Great last verse. Alliteratively I would add belief to bet because we need that too. I hope you follow the advice of your mystery contact.Â
A clever poem and resonating. I hope you find the light, sincerely Max
