Blues and Greens

~BLUES AND GREENS
Blues and greens on
a canvas page.
Painted hues that
take me there.
South Mississippi on a warm
spring night.
Falling rain.
Blue street lights.
Lou Reed singing
about Sweet Jane.
Lou Reed standing
on a corner.
Free!
Free at last!
Free to live.
Free to chase love’s illusion.
Too young to know better.
Too old to care.
Lost in the bliss
that is seventeen.
Lying on sheets
staring at the stars.
Everything is alright
in my world tonight.
“Dance with me.”
Orleans pleads
while ABBA calls
the dancing queen.
A letter written
to a sometime love.
A little love .
A little sin.
Puppies in love
we were then
enthralled with a love
that was sure to end.
Love did not find me
even though I loved more.
So I chased the dream
a little farther.
That love ended
on a warm spring night
The moon on the river.
A teenage fight.
My baby shot me.
She shot me dead.
Falling down
and up again.
I pined still
for my illusion of love
A multi-colored lady.
My cinnamon girl.
But love did not
find me.
Though I chased it
with all my heart.
Instead a new lust found me
that took me down.
Down to the river
where I almost drowned.
Black waters swirling
rushing over my head.
Mississippi moon above me,
an autumn red.
It was too late
To turn back now
I believed that
I was falling in love.
On and on
I tumbled
Until I was ready to die
But instead I just floated away.
Then in the midst of all this romantic travail
true love found me
in brown eyes, long legs,
and a sinful smile.
In that moment I was struck down
by a love that would last.
From deep within my heart
all my illusions passed
Blues and greens
on a canvas page.
Painted hues that take me there.

This poem was written for a painting of mine with the title of the same name. When I tried to describe it, for some reason, I was taken back to 1975. In April of that year me and my best friend ran away from home to Hattiesburg Mississippi. This poem describes my life as a runaway at seventeen.
