Bunny and Jack

(My Mam and Dad)

Bunny and Jack

She looks at his weary weathered face
He once braved the hardiest of storms on his seafaring chase
Trawling the ocean casting his massive meshed nets as he chain smoked his woodbine cigarettes
But that was before his illness when he collapsed in the early morning light
He was walking down to the harbour and his boat was in sight
Without much warning well he had never complained
yet his wife had seen him holding his upper arms as he grimaced and strained

At least he hadn’t fallen on his boat in the middle of the sea
He fished along with his brothers, sons so they were all family
His middle daughter had heard him as he slumped on the ground
Bless him he fell with such force making an awful sound
Well needless to say he never ever fished again after his horrible stroke with a blood clot on his brain
Jack was only fifty eight so not that old at all
Nowadays he sits in his wheelchair sadly staring at a wall

Too many fags that’s what his offspring said as they sat by their paralyzed Father on the edge of his bed
His doting wife ‘Bunny’ as everyone knew her by though her proper name was Mabel but that handle made her sigh
She cared for her husband for a long seventeen years the two of them together shared laughter and tears
Eventually both of them with Bunny following her spouse spent the last of their fews years in a residential care house
