CITY LIFE AT TWO O'CLOCK

It's two o'clock in my city in the afternoon
The month is December may as well be June
For the homeless man still sleeps in the shop doorway
Asking for change and hoping you will stay
People have no time to say hello or goodbye
Please and thank you are non existent as I wonder why
Teenagers think they are so hip and cool
When really they should be studying hard at school
Hustle and bustle part of everyday city life
One person elated and another in strife
Go about your business then as you must do
City life in December it's now just after two

Five Stars I tried, they would not stick
Where I live in California, Bakersfield, the homeless rate is 40 percent
That is unbelievable.. they are everywhere and these are not "bums"
like in the old days.. when men would hang out with a bottle lying in the gutter.. I mean that is still there.. and always will be no doubt. But there is a wave of tweeners of people inbetween one thing or the next. Not eligible for one program and not able to qualify for that... It is sad.. I have a home for a moment.. but two years ago.. I was a homeless... and it is ugly. I am so grateful for a place to sleep and a place to eat... and a few friends,.
Your write is full of quiet dignity and many an afternoon I sat with just that
feeling watching folks.. and wondering about where this one was going and knowing what this one was doing.. and being so invisible. Excellent poem
