Cockles in Vinegar

Laverbread comes to mind
On occasion
When I think of you dad
Mushrooms and brylcream
Cockles in vinegar
Squashed in car trips
Sweet condensed milk

A treat on a spoon
You would give me to sup
Early riser, as you were
We both up with the moon
Back to bed now you'd say as
you set off to work
And I worshiped you then
Almost till... I was ten

Till you were my first heartbreak
Till you never came back
Till I never ate mushrooms again
After that

M ~

Hi Marion,
This is a very nice poem, yet such a sad ending.

I’m on opposite side of spectrum with same result…. I met my biological father at age 12, I resented all the shit I went through without him there then, so I told him he didn’t deserve me now…

Sooo sad Marion, your poem started of with me smiling and ended with tears. Knowing the relationship and bonds we have with our kids, it’s just not fair. BIG HUGS, he definitely missed out and I’m sure regretted that choice since.

Hi Rob, you are young...at the time in your life when a dad would be a mate, a strength, a support...sadly I would say that 50% of population never get brought up by 2 parents. Its a long time ago for me now but i just like to revisit and write...clear the brain out lol. My father wasn't a bad man he just fell in love and remained with her for the rest of his days...the fall out was 5 children and a broken mother left behind. You find your strengths elsewhere Rob...for me it was my nan and an amazing step dad who is still with my mam...later... my strength was my own kids. Still is. Thanks Rob and many hugs to.you xx

Being Me

Pinned this because I love how simple things on their own — lavabread, brylcream, squashed up in cars, sweet condensed milk etc — are recalled to stir up wonderful memories. And the cockles! The title is perfect. Cockles in vinegar. Clever use of the word vinegar as it all went sour in the end x
