Poem -

coming back to a home you've never been to

You make me excited
to leave the butterflies
in my stomach behind.
You make me excited
to get comfortable
and settle into a routine
(something I imagined
was impossible).

I look forward to waking up
to the same face over
and over,
endlessly.
I look forward to duetting
our favourite songs
in the kitchen
while we make breakfast.
I can't wait for the day
that the newness melts away
from touching your skin,
so when I curl up in your arms
before we sleep,
I forget there was ever a time
I couldn't do so,
and I fall into my destined rhythm
as easy as breathing.
I can't wait for the familiarity
we've built together over eternity
up until now,
in our other lives
with our other love stories.
You are my destiny,
always.
You are the body
was meant to sleep beside
until I sleep forever.
You are my home,
and all my life
I waited to look at something
and realize it was what
I'd been missing,
and as soon as I clung to you
in that airport for dear life,
it was liking finding my place
in the universe
a thousand times over.
I could've sworn I heard God tell me
"here,"
when I kissed you,
as he handed me the key
to my own heart.

Since you went back
to your stomping grounds,
I've wrapped your hoodie
around me as I slept
and dreamt it was you holding me,
but it's the nights I spent
with my head on your chest,
dozing off,
that I'm holding out
for getting back.
(You are the dream I never want to wake from)
(The memory of you tastes so much sweeter than my imagination of you did).
