DEMENTIA (In Loving Memory of You, Grandpa)

I will never forget the way you looked at me
When I left a temporary imprint
Of a kiss from my lipstick on your forehead
Your eyes filled with such calmness
I knew it was coming, it could be any day
Before your angel would come to take you away
Some days you knew it too
Then others you would forget who was who
I miss walking by your side
With your arm locked inside of mine
In the backyard we were going in circles
As you insisted we had to find the others
Even though the others were no longer there
Telling you the truth, I could not bear
So we simply walked round and round
Until you were ready to go sit down
You would read me your stories
And I will never forget
When you said the words
You were a "waste of talent"
I sincerely hope you did not think that was true
Because you inspired me to write
And you meant the world
To everyone you knew
On That Saturday you looked at me
With such confusion
That is when I realized
It was just a delusion
You said who is that
You called me that "beautiful girl"
I said Grandpa, it's me
I'm your granddaughter
The smile that quickly showed up on your face
Instantly made me feel safe
I saw at that moment you became aware
That it was actually me standing there
You remained so strong for us all
We were not ready for the phone call
Now that your angel has taken you away
I miss you more and more every single day

Valerie! I can truly relate to this touching write. My mother died of dementia last year. She didn't know me in the end. But there was a time or two when she could still speak a little and focus that she seemed to recognize me…her first born. Yep, you grandad and my mom are have a grand time now!

A so so sad way to end a long and vibrant life!
Difficult for those left behind to witness such a tragic end!
Must try to remember them as they were in happier times
as difficult as that is.
A sad but tender sweet tribute to your dear grandpa!
Hugs, Jack XOXOX
Thank you Jack! I was very close to him and I know he is in a better place now. :)
