Dementias Blessings

He awoke it was their honeymoon
she lay on the satin sheets
so young and beautiful
He whispers I am crazy
about you darling.
I will die in love with you.
Like mist she was gone
It was now in the hospital
in the middle of the night.
The nurse held up his daughter
she was so beautiful.
She was going to look
like his beloved Mary.
In a moment
he was sat having coffee with Mary
they were older,much older.
His hair was thinning now
hers was grey.
She was still lovely.
The were discussing
their retirement days.
Mary said
it will be our time my love.
we will go to Europe
and see everything.
Then that mist again.
Next moment he was at a funeral
The family are all around him.
He places a single
red rose on a coffin.
looking at the shining filigree
name on the headstone
It was Mary.
A noise jolts him back to now
the door chimes.
His daughter was on the step
he was right she looks like her mother.
She goes to the refrigerator
Sees the twelve cartons of milk.
Attesting to his time travels
and quietly fixed his sandwich.
Then she speaks softly
Don’t you get lonely?
living here Dad.
All on your own
now moms gone
He looks up returned
Momentarily to the present
And whispers
No Love not lonely
Never Lonely.
