Poem -

Division

At first he is coveted

Each morning you watch as he

Rises heavily

Mussy-haired and yawning

Leaving his side of the bed warm

And smelling like his shampoo

He puts cream in his coffee

(No sugar)

And after you knot his tie

(Half windsor)

He leaves for work

But there comes a day

When you no longer watch

Captivated

As he rises each morning

More heavily

When you forget the smell of his shampoo

When you don’t know

What he puts in his coffee each morning

When holding hands becomes

“move over, it’s too hot.”

When he leaves for work after

What was it?

It doesn’t matter.

Because his side of the bed is already cold

Before you wake.
