Enough

My old soul trapped within
I come to you once again,
our time together,
always fleeting,
time moves on
never retreating.
I ask you my old friend,
why is it that we’ve come so far
and arrived so short?
They say we need more,
“when is enough?”
my familiar retort.
Our children
we need to feed,
so we languish in
an incessant greed,
having swapped it
in desirous need,
for what once was
a silent creed.
Moderation has become a cancer,
yet we welcome a new tumor
as our ultimate answer.
Up-sell and add-on,
our new religion,
it has become truly
our soul mission.
It must be done now
in order to stay,
ahead of the game,
something we’ve adopted
along the way.
The other guy pushes,
so we must push back,
never considering,
we've truly lost track.
Because
there are bills to pay,
jobs to keep,
so we march on,
a harvest to reap.
But my old soul friend,
I’ve stepped off the ride,
And I see the charade,
so few see,
that merry barricade,
they’ve sustained with glee.
Happy they are
as they play the game,
never enough,
yet as they play,
it’s never the same.
The same as it used to be,
comforted and content,
they wish for those things,
yet hold them in contempt.
They’ve been taught,
“step outside
your comfort zone”
so as to up sell and provide
more to the throne.
The majesty of growth,
never subsiding,
a bush growing wildly,
trimming as an art.
long in hiding.
We’ve forgotten,
my old soul friend,
that seasons exists,
so in the end,
we can look back and savor,
the things we’ve acquired,
and realize “enough”,
is always required.
Because of you
my dear old friend,
I see these things
now and shudder,
I wonder when it is,
So many others will utter,
“enough is enough”,
My bread needs no more butter.”

Well versed Robert, and a poignant message within a cocktail of some strong lines and images
How very true! An original and clever piece, although in parts I fell off track a little, it certainly made a valid point.  Perhaps just a little long but a great job nonetheless Robert.  Loved that final line :)
