Epitaph in Wood

Farewell to a humble visage
its sight filled with memories
farewell to a structure
its wood running with time
farewell to a marker, the last one remaining
of a far more pleasant past, beyond all reclaiming
I cannot fight to save it
there would be no point
I cannot express the loss
it would lead only to conflict
those wish it gone are my family
though that word may be too strong
as they see in my eyes not pain, but a feeling horrid and wrong
farewell to the times had in and around
farewell to the footprints covering the ground
farewell to the laughs, their echoes soon to die
farewell to the view from within, of both earth and of sky
so long to the past, fore it am I forced to outgrow
the utter horror of the present all I am permitted to know
so long to the wonder, the glee at the sight
and hello to the abyss, cold as arctic night
I shall miss you, old barn
your foundation all that shall remain
I shall mourn you, old friend
with my heart crushed by the pain
what little there shall be gained by your passing soon to be lost
forgotten in time, frozen by life's frost
as no matter what comes from seeing you razed
shall not even replace when by an arrow you were grazed
and thus a place once seen as a beacon of the past
shall be gone in but hours, the departure too fast
leaving not but the rock on which it was lid
all in exchange for trite money to be paid
the beloved memories within, reduced to but naught
killed by the cruel march of time, in which they are caught
