Poem -

Equals

Like the weathered oak we stand
arms outstretched in the wind
except that there is none here

Braving elements extreme
never moving, never moaning
enduring another day

Present during nations crisis
indifferent to the drama
thirsting for water not blood

How many decades have passed
where people once lived in peace
must I weep amber tears

Not fully comprehending why
we'd rather than live die
for the benefit of others

Confusion sets in like a fog
we strike out and grope
touching, offending some

Lain to rest with many
a mass grave is filled
the headstone reads Freedom

The only kind is being
released from mortal woes
buried with mortal foes

My supposed enemy and I
lay side by side in dirt
neither of us the other hurt
