Poem -

Expectations

I sit
Silently
In a classroom
Slowly going insane
As the seconds tick through me
Trying too hard to look like I care
Because that's what's expected

I try
Unsuccessfully
To be understood
Hiding behind sensitivity and sarcasm
In hopes to leave my own impression
But I always find myself
In the shadow of another
Because that's what's expected

I wait
Impatiently
For a chance to rebel
Saving myself from normality
And it's unknown criteria
Yet, I conform to its standards
Nameless and choice less
Because that's what's expected

I laugh
Half-heartedly
At the joke this society is
Reaching for an explanation
That is unobtainable
So I settle for what's given
For fear of asking too much
Because that what's expected

I sit
Silently
In a classroom
Pondering over the weight
Of this burdening intellect
Until the monotoned rings
Signal unwanted migration
To another zone of discomfort
Another place to pretend
That I'm less than what I am
To avoid these expectations
Another place where I again sit
Silently
In a classroom
