Fellow man

Fellow man

Can I  help

The man on the corner

Laying in direct sunlight

Drying out from alcohol

Under a grey dirty blanket

In that split second

Walking past the dead

Do I or don't I

Give a damn for my

Brother on

The street

.....my fellow man

There's a wonderful; though probably apocryphal: story about Diogenes of Sinope...one of the founders of the Cynical School of Philosophy. He'd lived in the streets of Athens for most of his life; begging for his bread and imparting his ideas to anyone who would (or wouldn't) listen.
When he met Alexander the Great; so the story goes: the Conqueror said to him, "What would the philosopher ask of the Emperor?"
Diogenes squinted up at him and replied: "I'd ask you to step out of my sun!"

This piece reminded me of that story.

It's important to ask the question you ask at the end of this poem. It's equally important to remember that "The man on the corner" is also a living, thinking, questioning human being...he's probably asking himself the same question about you...and you may not like the answer he comes up with!!

That's true Jason and in charity work or the work of giving "an eye for an eye" don't apply so it does not matter what the homeless thinks about me as giving is unconditional- the only point I would draw the line is if my life was in danger from the person but apart from that it's all unconditional giving; thank you for your good comments. Kind rgs Jai:)

My Dear Brother Poet Jai,

The mendicants mourn

In spirits slurred sojourn

On the streets they now live

Seeking alms us to give

Peace and Love,
