Poem -

Fire and Butter

I walk alone at night with you

Your hand filling mine

Just the way it used to

Fingers gently entwined

You breathe like a violin

I feel sadness on your skin

I tell you not to cry

As if I have the right

Your sobs are soft as butterflies

As I walk alone at night

My lips and teeth are still

But my mind is racing

I feel a frigid chill

Upon our warm embracing

The fireflies ignite my eyes

Holding them like cages

They fly through ducts

That I had shut

For what I thought were ages

Rolling from my dirt soaked cheeks

The flies begin to leak

The fireflies and butterflies

Are talking but don’t speak

They sing songs with light and dance

As if they've never had the chance

To speak but not

Sharing their thoughts

Through nothing more than romance

I walk alone at night

With the memory of your palm against mine

I walk alone at night

With your butterflies flooding my mind

Like butter to fire you melt in my hand

Whispering in a language only we understand

Your face pressed tightly in my hair

Inhaling bites of night-soaked air

Your chest skips like a stone

Your lungs push behind your bones

Your smile is loose and your grip is tight

As we walk alone at night
