Flicker

Flicker, flicker throughout the night
how my heart mirrors the failing light
and plunging into darkness losing sight
of what in youth had seemed so right.

Gazing upon friends from previous ages
scars written upon their faces like yellowed pages
of a book long kept within sorrow's cages
worn by despair and pointless rages

Childhood passions and dreams now lost
not knowing the weight, unaware of the cost
being from our beds into adulthood tossed
cruel years survived separating silver from dross

Flicker, flicker dearest fading memory
set one from their own delusions free
for it's in death that I'll at last see
the love that life deprived of me
