Footsteps

For thousand of years,
throughout the city and the meadows,
behind the corner, on your doorsteps,
I’ll be hiding in the shadows.
When the Moon is high
and the lights are burning low,
where the darkness is all around you
and you got no place to go.
While your feet are tired
and your thoughts are running wild,
some might stop and ask you,
why don’t you ever smile?

Why don’t you?

This poem conveys a haunting presence, as if a shadowed figure or memory lingers around, watching through time and space, hidden yet close.
It evokes a sense of loneliness and introspection, with the speaker observing the listener's journey, perhaps noticing the weariness and absence of joy in them.
The final lines subtly question the emotional weight the listener carries, adding a reflective layer that invites the reader to think about their own inner battles and the reasons behind unexpressed emotions.
