Poem -

Gee what a night, Australian burning gum .

There once was a swagman
He was a jolly old man
Settled by a billabong
beneath the shade
of a Coolabar tree
The scented leave's
fell into the fire that night
Cast upon him a
Eucalyptus trance
By firelight
Creating a land of dreaming
Beneath the stars in sight witnessing the strangest thing's
Two kangaroo's
dancing the tango
By the shimmering spring
Rubbed his eyes
such joys they bring
Laughing loudly
Breathing in more smoke
In the trees above him
He listened very carefully
Something spoke
What was it he did see
A koala drinking a cuppa tea
Smiled at the old man
and said hey mate
My name is Fred
Rubbing his eyes again
Shaking his head
In disbelief
Sniffing in more eucalyptus
From the burning gum leaves
Took a deep breath
And turned around
something moving
the ground
Looking down
towards the sound
You will not believe
What he found
A baby brown snake
Wearing a crown
Covered in rubies and diamonds fair
The old swagman said
gday mate what you got there
The snake replied ,
Touch it if you dare hiss SSs
I shall bite you fair and square
The old man look in disbelief
As the snake slivered away
towards the bushes
Vanishing beneath
The old man gently yawned
Breathing in more smoke
Coughing so hard he almost choked
Much to his surprise
Couldn't believe his eyes
Diamonds within his hand's
He couldn't understand
Was that a magic snake that spoke
Causing me to choke
Leaving diamonds for a prize
Can't believe my eye's
Gleaming beneath the stars
in the night sky
Caused the old man to cry
Looking back within his hand
Just dusty sand remains
What's going on
I'm loosing my brain's
Oh I've had enough he said
Shaking his weary head
Time i prepared for bed
Gee i hope it rains
No more eucalyptus trance
Nor kangaroo dance
Its not my cuppa tea
To see a Koala drinking
within a tree
Nor talk to a royal snake
No chance should i take
I'll put out this burning fire
No more shall i
hallucinate
I'm back on a plane tomorrow
interstate
Once the fire was out
He sat within the darkness
Of the night
Nothing but the stars
Giving him light
Looking out
at the shadows of tree's
The silence given his heart
Such gentle ease
He couldn't see clear
But something within his ear
As he smiled so pleased
Listening to the laughter
Of a kookaburra
As it took flight
Somewhere in the distance
Thinking to himself
Gee what a night
Trancing dream
This Eucalyptus
It's a bit alright.
