Growth

Growth

Why do you get to grow?

While I wait and wilt and dream of

What you’ll be in the mornings

Spent without me, in spite of me.

You bloom so beautifully in this dark place

While I sink beneath the soil,

Gasping for air, for light, for love

Telling myself this is home.

I hope I hurt you as I grew,

A fraction of the hurt you caused me

As you spread your roots under my skin

And told me this was ours.

I wait for the sunlight to come,

To ease this burden of our darkness

I’ve trapped myself in because of love,

And truth and light once shared here.

Before the sun itself died

As you took from it

All you took from me,

Painfully, and without respite.

Why don’t I get to blossom,

Into this being away from you?

As you grew from me taking everything

Leaving only the dirt behind.

Please let me grow.

Please allow me this chance.

Like the leaf leaves the branch.

Like the love left our land.
