Happy Birthday Mezzy Lou

Happy Birthday my sweet Sister, my precious Mezzy Lou;

You name was Melodee Melissa, but this was our pet name for you!

Today you’d have been sixty four, nine years younger than am I;

But the only way I can give you love now, is throwing kisses to the sky!

Too many saddened years ago, you ended all your pain;

For your husband made you feel worthless, filling your life with all his bane!

I look back on all the golden memories, of myself and little sis;

And every year on the sacred date, it’s the most that you I miss!

I remember how Mommy dressed you up, in silks right to the nines;

You were her darling little princess, clad in clothes of rich design!

I taught you to play gin rummy, at a very early age;

Before too long you beat me, you were quite the little sage!

You decided to seek a Business Degree, and got accepted to Purdue;

In those days for a young lady, not an easy thing to do!

You graduated with honors, met your future Husband there too;

Our Father would have killed him, had he known what was in store for you!

This date, June 1st, is always hard, for we should be talking on the phone;

Instead of you up there in Heaven, and me here all alone!

I’ll bet your friends made you a big cake, saying “Happy Birthday, Melodee”;

As you blow out all the candles, you’ll wish you were still down here with me!
