Poem -

"Have a drink on me!"

"Have a drink on me!"

On white horses a dirty man rode, barrel upon barrel of his liquid gold
Day's were long, winter's were cold, there was a meal waiting for him when he got homeย
On cobbled stones, you heard the hooves, they would clip clop to merry old fool'sย
Tirelessly the worker would be, but kids around the street heard his whistled tunes

Delivery from a dray and horseย
Vintage history, nostalgic of courseย
Take a moment and really pause
A shame, vaux closed their doorsย

I saw a man with a flat cap on with a grey moustache, I thought, he's from the olden days
We didn't speak to anyone, and the smell was awful, but still, we saw how beer was madeย
Upon leaving this concrete cave, a man shouted over the thick yeast air " kids, have a drink on me!"
One of my school friends laughed, and said, "he's alive! 5 minutes ago he was asleep in a drunken dream!"ย

Pub to pub they would travel, they would hear all the "hello misters"ย
One thing kids couldn't fathom, how did the poor horses never get blistersย
The image of these stuck with me, I always saw this, as a working class kind
For it must of been a sad day when the steel gates closed
The man shouting "kids, have a drink on me!" is now a ghostย

Delivery from a dray and horseย
Vintage history, nostalgic of courseย
Take a moment and really pause
A shame, vaux closed their doorsย
Now, it's just a museum thought
What a shame vaux closed their doors...

Like Tina, I love this too!!.....the whole vivid imagery of memories and smells of days gone by are brought back to life within these lovely phrases you've created here ~

My memories are shorter than what Vaux laid into the memory banks...but.....I HAVE been through the "Anheuser Busch" factories several times.....and meeting the Clydesdales was a blast!!.......VERY cool stuff!!.......tons-O-stars!!.......T xo ๐Ÿ‘Œโœดโคโœด๐Ÿ‘
