Heart

Heart

I wish I could rip my heart away
and trap it in a ring
like a ghost
and wear it on my thumb
not as a reminder of that
I once had a heart,
but as a reminder of that
I have to rip it off to live.

So that,
next time
when I have to walk away
from someone I love
I won’t feel anything
but a slight twitch in my thumb,
from the unbearable ache
of my dying heart.
