Poem -

Hello

If I were to say hello
Would the first thing you notice be the color of my skin?
Would my accent displease you?
Would my appearance mislead you?
From the person that I truly am
Does me being a certain color make you superior?
Is it not a fact that we share the same interior?
Does that mean that I am not meant to be smart, striving, or successful?

If I were to say hello
Would you first notice the shape of eyes?
Does the darkness of my hair subvert my disguise?
Does me being Apart of a certain culture make me smarter than you?
Should I speak in different languages to appease you?
Should I know cool things to be in your crew?
If I were to say hello
Would the first thing you notice be the way that I speak?
Does it mean that to the law I become gleek?
Does me being of certain race make me a hoodrat, a gangbanger, a greaser?
Does this mean that I’m a person that doesn't belong here?

If you were to say hello
I would notices all the same things
The hair, the eyes, the speech
I’d see everything
But I'd also see what lies within
Your personality
But when I look at you
I sit and think…
Do you see everything that I stand for?
Everything I want to be
I just wonder
Do you really see the real me?
