Hopeful Emigration
My heart is full of longing
for a happy life, and free
much like a thrilling rapture
that my family's here with me
Sailing for new beginnings
in a far distant land
my hope as high as it can be
with anticipations grand
Yet deeper than my longing
or my love for family
lies the deadly ocean
which looks to beckon me
The sky is dark, the waters terse
the mainsail broken free
I cannot hope that thing be right
as hopes are dashed from me
The look in loved one's fearful eyes
oh, horror fills their gaze
My heart is filled with harsh regret
gone hopes for prosperous days
what is left for me to do
but hold my loved ones near
and try to give some comfort
as the screaming end comes clear
I offer one resolving prayer
as to the deep we're cast
the anger well above us now
there's quiet here at last

Bittersweet. A powerful poem.Ā
This poem captures the intense emotions surrounding the experience of emigration, blending hope with the stark realities of danger and uncertainty. The speaker's longing for a better life is palpable, yet it contrasts sharply with the ominous presence of the ocean and the fears of loved ones. The imagery evokes a deep sense of turmoil as the speaker navigates the duality of hope and despair. The final lines bring a haunting yet serene resolution, suggesting acceptance amidst chaos. Overall, it beautifully encapsulates the struggle for a brighter future while acknowledging the fears and regrets that often accompany such journeys.
Thank you very much. That was very encouraging.
