A Horrid Dream

A Horrid Dream

On my incessant search for my lost rib,

I found heaps of ribs surrounding me!

Sad I was for having not found the lost one;

None suiting, leaving me shapeless!

         Years sped swiftly and I grew perturbed,

         where to search further: nearer or farther?

         Disheartened but not leaving hope,

         vowed to locate it somewhere on earth.

How glad I was to have found my own lost rib,

knocking on my bare sole one day!

Knew not the colour, cast and creed,

Knew only it was my own lost rib!

            Meeting at the same rendezvous everyday,

            we vowed to be each other’s.

            I grew thoughtful  day by day,

            yearning to own the rib, aching none.

I hopped aloof telling pals of it,

some to favour and others not;

My anxiety growing deeper and deeper

to keep the rib off hungry dogs around.

         At length, I made up my mind,

         to let the rib join heartily,

         stooping down to help it cleave.

An old bitch began barking fiercely;

hinting the rest to join quickly:

All they encircled me, protruding their paws

as if to tear me into a thousand pieces.
