House

House

House

By

Jude Kyrie

Tea leaves drying in the sink
Tin cans stacked on kitchen shelves.
Distant moons of lovers think
of beds and children and wedding bells.

In noise and laughter days of joy.
Of baby clothes for a girl and boy.
Days that circle round the sun
Of the quiet time when the day is done.

We fix up the house where memories come.
And wonder when it all is done
Pray to heaven that we will be saved
Standing by our parents grave.

The house is what we have become
With us forever until we've gone.
It wants the children that we grew.
The house knows now it owns them too.
