Hunger

I'm so hungry, thinking...
as I'm digging in the dumpster.
Feed me anything,
as my stomach gurgles in anger.
Walking down the side walk,
I stop and see watermelon in a neighbors yard.
My mind, my mouth, and stomach needing it.
I steal it. I eat it.
For a moment my belly filled,
my mouth tasting something wonderful,
other then spoiled, wasted, or raw food.
Eat quickly...Survive smartly or lose everything.
Hunch over your food,
eat it in 2 minutes or lose out.
Try to hide food for later.
Don't get caught or hunger will get the best of you.
Sneak food for older orphaned kids or get beaten and worn down.
Hunger constantly over powering your mind.
This is reality that of a struggling orphan.
A change needs to be made.
Hunger can't win.
There is more to this then just fighting to eat....
but hunger won and got the best of me.

Welcome, Rachel Schwan terrific write, you took an unusual angle on a difficult subject and did it well, 'hunger' is certainly a horrifying thing that too often society rationalizes (thinking that there are many food banks) and dismisses yet it is an unfortunate reality for many people, you illustrated as well some of the desperation hunger breeds, and how widespread an issue it is..... truly a thought provoking poem, well done poet
