Poem -

I burned a flag today

I burned a flag today.
She didn't rock she didn't sway.
She didn't cry out or scream or fuss.
She welcomed the flame, she's one of us.

She cried as her colors turned from faded to black.
She's served her country, its time it served back.
People in the streets, crying, screaming for liberty.
The revolution is upon us, it starts with you and me.
Her body is aged, and brittle from use, her fibers are worn from both praise and abuse.
Her fabric too tired to stretch and assist, the shoulders she used to shield are far too suppressed.

I burned a flag today.
Took her down and folded her neat,
With her stars shining proudly on top, her strong stripes underneath.
Her children cried out, as her fibers fought flame.
Their tears wet their shirts as they sang out her praise.
They cried as they lit her, and sent her away.
There is not liberty here, no.
Not today.

I burned a flag today.
And was hit, and cussed and sprayed.
I knew it was best though, that it ended this way.
I was practicing what she fought to protect you see, the rights to life liberty and happiness.
The constitutional, and unalienable rights that were granted to me.
I fanned the flames, to ensure her demise, I wouldn't be one of those irresponsible types.
I won't start what I won't finish. I won't leave any trace, if I scatter her ashes, I know it's okay.
Even if I'm bloodied, with the colors that we share, I know here that she loves me, I know that she's there.
I know that old glory was made to be flown, and she's flying in spirit, in every heart, every home.

I burned a flag today.
Not for me, but for you.
I lit my beliefs and scattered them far
so we can have liberty wherever we go.
I cried as she left me, her ashes and dust.
I cried as the liberty was taken from us.
