I PROMISE

I PROMISE

This poem was written in my writing group. We all had to open a novel at the same page then write something based on the first sentence at the top of the page which had to be our first line. I was taken down the route of Paul Simon's song "At the Zoo."

I promise I won't bite.

So said the lion on my right.

I promise I'll be gentle and kind.

So said the tiger i could never find.

I promise you will find yourself.

So said the owl malingering on the shelf.

I promise the journey won't be hard.

So said the elephant in my backyard.

I promise it will be worth it in the end.

So said the hyena then he disappeared round the bend.

I promise I'll be with you all the way.

So said the bat who hangs out somewhere else in the day.

I promise all will be well, you must believe me.

So said the chameleon, er where was he?

I promise your life won't be wasted.

So said the chicken whose fate was to be basted.

I promise you'll find answers to all the wheres, whys and whats.

So said the leopard who lied, like all the others, then changed its spots.
