IF ONLY THEY KNEW

IF ONLY THEY
KNEW
I have a secret
That nobody knows
In revealing it now
His true colours will show
She’d left her husband
For the umpteenth time
As far as I know
He'd committed no crime
She walked off the farm
And moved into town
When along came a man
With no right to come round
They had to be quiet, quick and discrete
But they'd not part company
Untill the act was complete
One night he rolled up
In his bright purple car
He found her in tears, sad and distraught
He had no idea What she was about to report
She gave him a kiss
A cig and a beer
They sat down together
She told of her fear
She muttered the words
Of which there were two
They sent him to silence
Coz now he too knew
She whispered, 'I've missed'
He was cut to the quik
His face turned so white
She thought he'd be sick
What will we do
She managed to say
I refuse to get rid of it
And I won't give it away
With his head in his hands
He thought for awhile
An idea was forming
This kid could never be his child
When finally he spoke
To him it made sense
Go back to the farm; fix what is broken
We'll suffer no consequence
The husband was thrilled
As he believed all she said
It happened so quick
With no rights being read
The baby arrived
Albeit a month soon
They were so over-joyed
They were over the moon
A boy had been born
With Rod as his name
The husband so proud
To the world he made claim.
(If only he knew)
The truth of the fact
His wife and his brother
Had found success in their pact
No one suspected
No one could see
He was so like his cousin
Identical as could be
Being new on the scene
I should have known
As their names I got muddled
I was completely thrown
Their secret was safe
As they thought it would be
Apart from one thing
She got pissed and told me
I wasn't surprised
Or even shocked at all
Considering his past
It was bound to befall
It was five years later
And I'd just had a baby
A boy of my own
Three boy cousins in the one family
One dad on the throne
Three mothers all different
One red, and one brown,
With me the token blonde
And one lying arsehole
Who had everyone conned.
This story so true
Could never be told
As the players involved
No longer able to defend their role
The baby is gone
By the most tragic of ways
Then several years later
His mother gave up her days
The timing was now right
For me to come thru
But then he upped and died
So now it was me
Who only knew
I wanted to come forward
And bare light on their shame
But for the ones left behind
Their worlds could never be the same
So up until now
I had decided to stay quite
In telling this secret
I find no delight
30 years have now past
I've no need to feel brave
I now simply refuse
Taking this dreadful secret to my grave
