Imaginary Lovers

Sometimes I think I made you up in my head,
It would be easy,
Because you are beautiful and far away,
So yes, sometimes I honestly believe you were a fantasy.
That none of these words I cherished were ever real at all.
Maybe my momma was right,
I live too often in books, dreaming life away,
And maybe that's all you were.
You are so beautiful,
Edged in shadow and mystery,
So many questions that I'll never know the answers to,
So many stories you'll never tell--
My writers mind improvises.
Maybe;
When you were young you broke your leg,
And never trusted tree roots again.
You loved your father with an inexplicable innocence,
And now you wonder why.
The first time you fell in love,
You thought she was an angel,
And maybe she was,
But then her wings turned black and so did your hope.
You loved firecrackers,
Because they lit up the night sky and suddenly you could see,
And that made you feel better.
You once climbed all the way to the top of a maple tree and imagined you could see all the way to the ocean,
All the way to Africa,
Asia,
Australia,
And all the other places starting with A.
I'm just a silly girl who made up a boy to love her,
And now he's real,
But he doesn't love her,
Anymore.
