July 28, 2012

They said don't feed the beast
So I'm on a strict diet
Of caffeine and nicotine..
As if that would keep it quiet

Meanwhile. I'm shrinking down to nothing
I fall to pieces and immediately turn to dust
Going once! Going twice!
All the way down to all the way gone

Thin at the bone.
Cutting my lost causes.
Hope is a joke
The punchline is "Dream on, bitch"

It's summer, 2012.. And it's a swelter
The skies might have been the brightest  I'd ever seen, had I looked up
Instead I'm melting.
The air is crisp, and thick, and rich, and full..
This is the darkest storm I've had to weather
This is the coldest hell.

I've hurt myself a million times
You know.. to prove that I can feel
This time it isn't working too well
I see tunnelvision superhighways
I hear my ears ring off key, on beat
I taste battery acid at the back of my tongue
But not once have I felt a thing

I don't know whether to complain
See, nothing's getting any better
But it isn't worse per say
Just crisper.. Thicker.. Richer.. Fuller
Pulling me farther and farther away

Ship's set full sail
No match for the depth and dimension of the ocean
It got swallowed whole

And the light was snuffed beneath the weight
Displacing as the darkness swells
This is the crispest, thickest storm I've had to weather
This is the richest, fullest hell

The recurring image of the storm here is a perfect analogy of what it is to live in a personal hell. The frank brutality is both apt and unthinkably honest.
And the devastating line, "All the way down to all the way gone" has a simple grandeur to it which is heartbreaking and beautiful.

Magnificent poem; which HAD to be written...which also means that it HAS to be read.

Bravo! And be well...

J.
